Utilizing Our Long History to Build for the Future

Since 1946 McFarland-Johnson has been a leader in providing innovative designs to meet ever changing technological advances. As the communication industry moves toward total wireless services, McFarland-Johnson has developed the expertise to meet the parameters of telecommunication firms with their reception and transmission requirements. McFarland-Johnson has provided services for over 180 sites from Pennsylvania to Maine. Typical services McFarland-Johnson has provided are: site survey, geometric design and layout, site grading and drainage, structural design and analysis of existing guyed towers, monopoles and lattice towers, new designs for undeveloped sites and for existing buildings or water towers, and electrical design and analysis for both microcell and macrocell antennas.

Connecticut and Rhode Island Markets

McFarland-Johnson is providing design and construction administration services to Sprint PCS for both raw-land builds and co-locations in the Connecticut and Rhode Island markets. For raw-land builds, services provided include site survey, the preparation of lease exhibits, layout of the facility compound, access road and utilities, site grading and drainage design, preparation of erosion and sedimentation control plans, coordination of earth resistivity and geotechnical testing, and the preparation of construction drawings.

Co-location projects may also include rooftop and water tank structural analysis, the design of frames and mounting hardware for PCS equipment, structural analysis of monopoles to assess the ability to support additional loads, and complete electrical design utilizing existing building and/or facility electrical components. Construction observation services are provided to assure that the facility is installed in accordance with plans and specifications and local building code requirements. Construction Control Certifications and Record Drawings are issued for each site.

Northern New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Manhattan Markets

McFarland-Johnson has provided Structural and Electrical Engineering services to AT&T, through their prime A&E consultant VelociTel, for the 2G and 3G equipment in Northern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and Manhattan.

The 2G projects addressed the placement of cellular antennas and the associated signal equipment on buildings within urban areas. McFarland-Johnson’s responsibilities included attendance at the initial site investigations to determine the structural, electrical and mechanical designs necessary to facilitate the installation of the equipment. Calculations were prepared to determine the ability of the building to carry the loads. Electrical responsibilities included the evaluation of the existing services equipment and the capability to handle the new loads, the design of any modifications to the existing equipment or new service, the coordination with the power companies, field visits to provide final coordination with the contractors and utility company, and mechanical design in providing proper ventilation to the appropriate equipment.

The 3G projects addressed the replacement of equipment on older sites. McFarland-Johnson’s responsibilities included attendance at the initial site investigations to determine the structural and electrical needs of installing the new equipment on or within the designated building. Upon acceptance of the building for use, McFarland-Johnson prepared the necessary structural and electrical designs to facilitate the installation of the equipment. Electrical responsibilities included the evaluation of the existing service equipment and the capability to handle the new revised loads, the design of any modifications to the existing equipment or new service, the coordination with the utility companies and field visits to provide final coordination with the contractors.
