This project involves the transformation of the existing 55,000 square foot, 1950's Binghamton University East Gym structure into a 65,000 square foot Campus Recreational Center. Multiple schemes were pursued and evaluated, with McFarland Johnson providing programming support services for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler and fire alarm systems for this project. A final Program Report, which offered three alternatives at varying cost levels, was prepared.
Upon completion and review of the Program Study, the University selected to pursue a $10 million option. The new facility's exterior and multi-leveled entry/lobby will display the center's new image while providing Binghamton University with a recreation-stimulated social hub. The interior renovation is planned to strategically reactivate the existing facility by opening up views to the various programs offered within. The center will house such features as a new fitness space; a renovated natatorium and pool; modified locker room space; and lobby. The project will also involve modifications to existing fitness and gym areas, with a fitness mezzanine incorporated into the structure. McFarland Johnson is providing design services for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler and fire alarm systems for this project.
